It is important to explore the ways in which we can organize our thoughts and behaviors to facilitate healthy connection between the different aspects of our lives. Sometimes people use the term “balance”, but a more appropriate term is “interplay”. “Balance” is flawed, because it is impossible to balance two elements that are not of equal value. When you look at life versus work, the amount of time you spend working is oftentimes greater than the amount of time you spend taking care of responsibilities outside of work, including personal and recovery time. If we consider the number of hours we spend devoted to each element of our lives, from family and personal, to work time, we will generally see that most of us prioritize one above the others. This makes total balance very difficult, so you must critically evaluate the interplay between these conflicting commitments.
Ask yourself these important questions:
- How committed are you to your goals?
- How committed are you to self-improvement?
- How committed are you to your family, your wife, and your children?
